Originally from Buffalo, New York, Shaun Scott (aka Hida Okami) began playing L5R in 1999 (shortly after Honor Bound released) when a friend gave him some cards. He was drawn to the Crab Clan because they were the defenders of the Empire and duty mattered more than honor.
At the time, L5R was very active in Buffalo - weekly Swiss tournaments drew a dozen or more players, and Okami quickly became one of the Top 10 Crab players worldwide according to the Imperial Herald rankings at the time. He became the unofficial Crab Clan ambassador to the Dragon, and was very active on the listservs of both clans.
Okami travelled to GenCon 2001, where he participated in the Friendly Traveller Village event alongside fellow Crab players like Charlotte Ashley (Hida Shara). He and William Bogard (Hida Keitko) were instrumental in the formation of The Jade Hand, a player organization committed to playing untainted decks in tournaments. Originally intended as a Crab-only organization, the first members included Bob Yager (Hida Yagimaki), Paul Thorgrimson (Hida Togeriso) and Brian Foster (Kaiu Tsuchikau) - but the idea was popular among other clans and the Jade Hand soon recruited Matt Dalen (Tamori Shosei), Nancy Sauer (Daidoji Gisei), Yoon Ha Lee (Moto Maratai) and many others. In 2003, a Jade Hand contingent travelled to GenCon with the Jade Hand banner and presented AEG with a declaration, signed by scores of players who committed to playing decks free from the taint of Shadowlands cards.
In recognition for the dedication of its players, the Jade Hand was officially recognized in the storyline, and a small number of Personalities still bear the keyword. The Jade Hand now serves as the custodians of the Legacy format ruleset at the Jade Hand Forum. The Banner of the Jade Hand hangs proudly in his den, along with his daisho.
The L5R scene in Buffalo began to dwindle around the release of Diamond Edition - fewer people were playing in the area, fewer game stores remained and the product was no longer carried (and still is not to this day). From December of 2004 until the release of Emperor Edition, there was no L5R for Okami. A timely move to Pittsburgh changed all that - and a chance encounter at a local game store reintroduced him to his favorite game and new friends.
Okami typically plays Crab decks of any variety, though he has often been known to play decks from other clans, for fun and to better familiarize himself with the environment.
